Find Duplicate Files on Windows
Duplicate documents/files waste precious space on your computer’s hard disk — specially when you have an SSD — and make your laptop’s backups bigger for no suitable purpose. Here’s how to Find Duplicate Files on Windows.
Every program we advocate right here comes with a smooth installer that won’t try and deploy tool bars or junk ware on your system. We hate that, too, so we hung out locating the coolest programs.
How to Find Duplicate Files using Duplicate Cleaner
Digital Volcano’s Duplicate Cleaner is a good option. They also sell a paid version of this application with more features, but the free version provides some good basic duplicates scanning feature with a good interface. The installer redirects you through www.Download.com. But it would not try to install any junk ware on your system while installing it. Digital Volcano tries to make money the old-fashioned way, by simply providing a good product and hoping people buy the upgraded paid version with more features.
The Duplicate Cleaner provides a nice interface that will scan your computer including any external drives connected for duplicate files. The pro version scans also for very-similar music files images that are slightly different. But the free version has the just basic duplicate file finding features.
This application has an advantage over dupeGuru. That is its prettier interface. It holds your a bit more than dupeGuru does.
Finding Duplicate Files using dupeGuru
dupeGuru is another great application for this. It is completely free and comes in three flavors: dupeGuru, dupeGuru Pictures Edition and dupeGuru Music Edition. The pictures and music editions are specialized for finding similar pictures and music files. For example, the pictures edition will find copies/duplicates of the same photo even if they’ve been resized, slightly edited or even rotated. The music edition will find the same song, if they’re in different MP3 formats encoded at different bitrates. This program uses a “fuzzy match” algorithm which can find files that are very similar and not just completely identical.
PS Note: The dupeGuru site notes that Windows is no longer supported with them, but the links under “old versions” still work fine in Windows PC’s.
