Secret Conversations on Facebook
The end-to-end message encryption that Facebook promised to Messenger users back in July has finally finished rolling out to everyone. Here’s how to enable Secret Conversations on Facebook Messenger.
What is Facebook?
Facebook is a popular social networking site that makes it easy for you to connect and share with your friends and family online. Originally it is designed for college students. The Facebook was created in 2004 by Mark Zuckerberg while he was enrolled at Harvard University. But by 2006, anyone over the age of 13 with a valid email address could join Facebook. Today, Facebook is the world’s largest social networking site, with more than 1 billion users worldwide.
Facebook allows you to send messages and post status to keep in touch with your facebook friends. You can also share different types of content, like photos, videos and links.
While coming to privacy, Facebook offers privacy tools to help you limit who can see or cannot see the things you share. It’s very important to understand that Facebook is developed to be more open and social than other traditional communications.
Facebook has implemented 100’s of ways to offer privacy, but still people are expecting a much from it. So Facebook took action and implemented end-to-end encryption in its messenger.
A source informed Wired from Facebook that new “Secret Conversations” functionality is now available to all its 900 million users of the service.
However, the new end-to-end encryption doesn’t turn on automatically. You have to turn it on for each conversation.
How to Enable end to end encryption on Facebook Messenger or How to enable Secret Conversations on Facebook Messenger?
If you ever want to start a new encrypted conversation:
- Tap the new conversation icon at the top right.
- Tap “Secret” in the top right.
- Choose your recipient and begin messaging.
If you want to turn ongoing conversation into an encrypted Secret Conversation :
- Open the message thread.
- Tap their name at the top of your screen.
- Tap “Secret Conversation” to switch it over.
If you could not see these options, it could mean the other recipient doesn’t have the current version of Facebook Messenger. They will need to update their app for Secret Conversations to work. Also, Secret Conversations would not allow the sending of GIFs and videos.
Rather, you can still share picture and use stickers. Also it’s important to note that you can access your Secret Conversations only from the device it was enabled on. So if you start an encrypted conversation on your mobile phone, that’s the only place you can send or receive encrypted messages for that particular encrypted Secret conversation.
